On this day

October 3 in history

An atomic blast off Australia, a Brazilian oil giant, a Swedish striker, a ninja anime, and a record-breaking pop album all share this date.

October 3 opens with two very different bids for national power in the early 1950s. In 1952, Britain detonated its first atomic bomb inside a frigate anchored in the Montebello Islands off Western Australia, becoming the world’s third nuclear power. Exactly one year later, Brazil founded Petrobras, a state oil company with a monopoly and a popular slogan, “The oil is ours,” in a country that was then pumping very little crude.

The rest of the date belongs to talent and entertainment that crossed borders. Zlatan Ibrahimović, born in Malmö in 1981 to immigrant parents, went on to win titles across Europe and score goals in four decades. In 2002, the anime Naruto premiered on Japanese television and found a huge audience around the world. And in 2025, Taylor Swift released The Life of a Showgirl, an album written during her record-setting Eras Tour that became the fastest-selling album in American history.
