On October 3, 2025, Taylor Swift released The Life of a Showgirl, her 12th studio album, through Republic Records. Around 500 Target stores across the United States stayed open for the midnight release so fans could buy physical copies the moment it arrived. The same weekend, a companion film, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, opened in theaters in more than 50 territories and earned over 50 million dollars.

The album grew out of the Eras Tour, the most lucrative concert tour ever staged. During the Stockholm shows in May 2024, Swift approached the Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback, her collaborators on Red, 1989, and Reputation, and the three began working together. She flew back to Sweden between tour dates that summer and again over Christmas to record. The first song written was “Elizabeth Taylor,” and Swift said the album captured her inner life behind the scenes of the tour, along with her relationship with the football player Travis Kelce. Even her record label did not know the album existed until it was finished.

The standard edition runs 12 tracks and just under 42 minutes, mixing pop and soft rock with retro touches, live strings played by about 40 Swedish orchestral musicians, and a title track featuring Sabrina Carpenter. Swift had revealed the title in August on New Heights, the podcast Kelce hosts with his brother Jason.

Why it matters

The commercial response was enormous. The album sold 2.7 million copies in the United States on its first day, and after one week it had moved more than 4 million album-equivalent units, beating the single-week record set by Adele’s 25 in 2015 and becoming the fastest-selling album in American history. It gave Swift her 15th number-one album on the Billboard 200, the most for any solo artist, and stayed on top for 13 weeks. Its songs filled the top 12 spots on the singles charts in the United States, Canada, and Australia at the same time, and it finished as the best-selling album in the world in 2025.

Critics were more divided. Some praised its upbeat production and storytelling, while others called it a step back from her earlier work. That split did little to slow a record that showed how much commercial power a single artist could command in the streaming era.

The New Heights episode where Swift unveiled the album drew more than 1.3 million live viewers, setting a Guinness World Record for the most concurrent views of a podcast on YouTube.
